On Sunday 30th November myself and Eric were lucky
enough to be invited aboard Fort Victoria, a Royal Fleet
Auxiliary fleet support stores ship. We travelled
up to Liverpool where Fort Victoria is currently moored
in the dockyards waiting for essential maintenance.
This is a seriously impressive vessel, 203.5
metres in length and with a beam of 30.3 metres, she is truly
massive! The
picture to the left shows Fort Victoria in action
transferring fuel and supplies to an Air Craft Carrier.![]()
The RFA play a crucial part in supplying everything from fuel and machinery to mars bars and washing powder to navel vessels all over the world. Everything on this ship is large scale, from the impressive bridge, engine room, mission control, transfer rigs and flight deck to the huge holds that store aviation and propulsion fuel, water and supplies. It took all day for a tour, including the bridge, spacious accommodation (for RFA crew and officers), the impressive engineering and controls for ship to ship transfers, the stores, flight deck and even the life rafts! Lunch was served in the bar onboard, and very nice it was too. If you would like to find out more about the Royal Fleet Auxiliary then you can check out their website www.rfa.mod.uk . We both thoroughly enjoyed our day aboard Fort
Victoria and we even came away with some RFA goodies! The journey back down the M6 on a Sunday
evening was almost bearable, not a trip I like to do too
often!
Many thanks to Alec, a true "officer and gentlemen" for his hospitality and a very comprehensive and informative tour of the ship. We are making good progress on Sanity, all the sea cocks have been replaced, a new trim tab fitted, antifouling complete and some essential maintenance on the Port engine so I hope we will be back in the water soon! Wishing everybody a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year :-) |
